How to Choose the Right Livery Yard in South Africa

Your choice of livery yard affects your horse's health, your riding progress, and your bank balance. In South Africa, options range from basic paddock-only setups to luxury full-service facilities. Here's how to choose wisely.

Types of Livery

Full Livery (R4,500–R9,000/month)

The yard handles everything: feeding, turnout, mucking out, rugging, and basic care. You just ride. Ideal if you work full-time or live far from the yard.

Part Livery (R3,000–R5,500/month)

You share responsibilities with the yard. Typically they feed and turn out; you muck out and do evening checks. Good middle ground.

DIY Livery (R1,500–R3,500/month)

You rent a stable and paddock, and do everything yourself. Cheapest option but time-intensive — expect to spend 2+ hours daily at the yard.

Paddock Only (R800–R2,000/month)

Your horse lives out 24/7 with shelter. No stable. Suits hardy breeds (Boerperde, Nooitgedachters) and horses in light work.

What to Check Before Signing Up

Facilities:

• Arena quality and size (minimum 20x40m for dressage)
• Turnout paddocks — how many, what condition?
• Quality of fencing — avoid barbed wire at all costs
• Water supply — reliable, clean, accessible
• Stables — ventilation, size (minimum 3.6x3.6m), drainage

Management:

• Feed quality and routine — inspect the feed room
• Who is on-site overnight? What's the emergency protocol?
• Vet access — is there a regular vet, and how quickly can they respond?
• Farrier access — does a farrier visit regularly?
• AHS management — stabling at night, fans, midge control

Red Flags

• Overcrowded paddocks with insufficient grazing
• No nighttime supervision during AHS season
• Broken fencing or exposed wire
• Thin or neglected horses on the property
• No contracts or vague terms
• Resistant to you visiting unannounced

Top Tip

Visit the yard at feeding time, unannounced if possible. That's when you see the real standard of care. Talk to existing liveries — they'll give you the honest picture.

A good livery yard is worth paying extra for. Your horse's wellbeing depends on it.
