A saddle is the single most important piece of equipment you'll buy for your horse. A poorly fitting saddle causes back pain, behavioural issues, and long-term damage — yet many riders in South Africa are unknowingly riding in the wrong saddle.

Why Saddle Fit Matters

Your saddle is the bridge between you and your horse. When it fits well:

• Weight is distributed evenly across the horse's back
• The horse moves freely through the shoulder
• The rider sits in balance
• The horse is comfortable and willing

When it doesn't fit:

• Pressure points cause pain and white hairs
• The horse hollows its back, leading to muscle atrophy
• Behavioural issues (bucking, napping, girthiness) develop
• Long-term spinal damage can occur

General Purpose (GP)

How to Check Saddle Fit

Without the rider:

With the rider:

1. The lowest point of the seat should be in the centre
2. The rider should not feel pushed forward or backward
3. Check clearance again — it should still be adequate
4. Watch the horse move — it should swing freely through the back
