Endurance riding is one of South Africa's most accessible equestrian sports, and our incredible landscapes — from the Drakensberg to the Karoo — make it one of the most rewarding. Whether you dream of completing a 20km fun ride or tackling a 160km championship, here's everything you need to know.
What Is Endurance Riding?
Endurance riding is a long-distance race against the clock, with mandatory veterinary checks at regular intervals. The horse must complete the distance in good condition — the motto is 'to finish is to win.'
Distances
- Introductory rides: 20–30km
- Novice rides: 40–60km
- Intermediate: 80km
- Advanced: 100–120km
- Championship: 160km (one day)
Vet checks assess heart rate recovery, hydration, gut sounds, and soundness. If the horse doesn't pass, you're eliminated — this keeps horse welfare at the centre of the sport.
Best Breeds for Endurance in SA
- Arabian — the breed most associated with endurance internationally, valued for stamina, heat tolerance and recovery rates.
- Boerperd — hardy and surefooted, and campaigned successfully in South African endurance.
- Nooitgedachter — tough mountain breed with exceptional endurance.
- Arabian crosses — Anglo-Arab, Arab x Boerperd, and other crosses combine stamina with substance.
- Thoroughbred crosses — add speed if you're competitive.
Less commonly seen in endurance: heavier warmbloods, Friesians and draught crosses, which generally dissipate heat less efficiently over long distances. Individual fitness and management still matter.
Getting Started
Equipment
- Lightweight saddle — endurance-specific or good GP saddle. Weight matters over 80km.
- Breast plate — prevents the saddle sliding on hilly terrain.
- Easy boots or barefoot — many endurance horses go barefoot with boots for rocky sections.
- Crew gear — buckets, electrolytes, sponges, cooler blankets for vet gates.
Training
- Start with 20km rides and build distance gradually
- Include hill work for fitness
- Practice trot sets (15 minutes trotting, 5 minutes walking)
- Condition over 3–6 months before your first competition
Governing Body
Endurance riding in SA is governed by ERASA (Endurance Ride Association of South Africa). Membership gives you access to rides across the country.
