What Makes a Good Polo Pony?
Despite the name, polo ponies are full-sized horses (typically 15–15.3hh). The ideal polo pony has:
- Speed and agility — quick acceleration, tight turns, instant stops
- Courage — willingness to ride into the play and bump
- Responsiveness — must react to leg, seat, and neck-reining instantly
- Stamina — each chukka is 7 minutes of intense work
- Temperament — competitive but controllable

- Thoroughbred x Criolla/Quarter Horse — the international standard
- Argentine-bred — imported for top-level play
