The Essential Shot List

Every listing should include these 10 photos minimum:

1. Left side conformation — stand the horse square on level ground
2. Right side conformation — same angle, other side
3. Front view — straight on, showing chest and leg alignment
4. Rear view — showing hindquarters and hind leg alignment
5. Head portrait — ears forward, alert expression
6. Under saddle — walk — showing the horse working relaxed
7. Under saddle — trot — capturing movement quality
8. Under saddle — canter — showing balance and rhythm
9. Jumping (if applicable) — showing technique over a fence
10. Turnout / personality — horse grazing, playing, or being groomed

Phone Photography Tips

• Shoot during golden hour — early morning or late afternoon light is most flattering
• Clean background — avoid cluttered yards; use a simple paddock or arena
• Groom thoroughly — plaited mane, oiled hooves, and a shiny coat make a huge difference
• Get low — photograph at the horse's chest height, not from above
• Ears forward — have a helper with a treat or crinkly wrapper behind you
• Landscape mode — always shoot horizontal for conformation shots
• Burst mode — take 50 photos and pick the best 10-15

Common Mistakes
